About

Tamil Electronic Library is an attempt to provide a single comprehensive online resource, providing information on various topics of interest to the Tamils and to the public at large interested in Tamil Diaspora. Tamil is one of the major South Indian (”Dravidian”) Languages, currently spoken by over 70 million people worldwide. It is an international language with significant number of Tamils (upwards several thousands) in various parts of the world and recognition given as “one of the official languages” in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore to mention the main ones.

Initiative for the Tamil Electronic Library website started with a proposal that I made in the USENET mailing list “soc.culture.tamil” on 23 May 1994 and the site launched a year later on 25 May 1995.

The website was hosted during 1995 to 1997 from one of our university webservers
http://dcwww.epfl.ch/icp/ICP-2/tamil.html

and then moved in 1997 to Geocities portal (now owned by Yahoo)
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/5180/

With the registration of the domain name “tamilelibrary.org” in 2005, the website is being hosted since then under the lead URL

http://www.tamilelibrary.org.

Response of the public to this site has been overwhelming during the past decade and we would like to record our sincere appreciation and support for our effort.

Internet has grown tremendously during the past decade and along with that the amount of useful information available on the Net. To a large extent, lead search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN permit us to quickly locate information of interest. One major effort of Tamil Electronic Library has been to compile comprehensive listing of websites of interest to Tamil Diaspora (the most popular section of our website).

Ironically, as they grow, many websites change their lead URL. This leads to any bookmark made today to become obslete in few years. Our website itself has moved to different web-servers and along with that a change in the lead URL to access the site. Mainly to overcome this problem, we have chosen to reproduce the content of some articles which we consider very useful from various sites, giving due acknowledgement to the author/source. We have no intention whatsover to engage in plagiarism.

Feel free to post your comments. Enjoy browsing our site ;-)
